Writing With E.S.Wills

The First Draft is Finished

Written: 02/06/2026

It's nearly 6. I'm attempting, at least on weekdays, to consistently wake up at 5am to give me roughly around an hour of writing time each day.

The only issue is my partner's brother tends to have very loud alarms that he doesn't turn off quickly. Otherwise generally peaceful and uninterrupted.

I'm one of those writers that doesn't necessarily need music to work. It's useful if the rest of the world is too loud, but I find I focus better without it. Granted, to stop me going insane from the looping alarm, I've decided to put on some classical music as I write this entry. I can't write with vocals. It gives the sense that writing this blog is almost a refined practice.

I finished the first draft of The Degenerate. I am bouncing between printing the draft or just reading it on my computer. I've printed drafts before, and when I initially wrote Crypt I printed that one. Printing is satisfying, and I enjoy a hybrid approach to writing (paper and digital) but it can be expensive and to feel that the draft isn't polished but spend that much printing it can end up feeling demoralising.

I think I'm talking myself into re-reading on the PC. Taking physical notes, perhaps. And trying to avoid edit-as-I-go.

My emotions are mixed. On the one hand I'm glad I pushed through and did it and right now I'm satisfied with the chapter that was weighing on me. On the other, I'm still nervous. I think because pushing through the rereads to get to the second draft is another hurdle for me.

I've got to be kinder to myself, I think. I'm an inexperienced writer. That's not a bad thing to be. That doesn't necessarily mean a bad writer, just one that needs to get better with practice.

The thing about waking up early, that isn't so much of an issue when I'm due to start work, is that I do want to go and cuddle my partner.

I think, because I've done the hard bit and finished the draft, I'll do just that for a while. Until I have to start working.
